‘Fire and Ice’, which would have been the first purpose-designed ice rink for Wellington, but sadly it was ‘put on ice’ at the last minute, despite being designed, consented, and procured.
The International Ice Hockey Federation-sized rink planned for Hutchison Road, Newtown was to have been complemented by a 20 lane 10-pin bowling alley, café, pro shop, and function rooms.
In the interests of energy efficiency, the heat extracted from the ice would have been used to heat air and slabs elsewhere in the building. The bowling alley and concourse was to be naturally ventilated for most of the year in a system first developed by associate company Solarhomes Ltd at the Bluebridge Ferry terminal.
The north-facing roof of Fire and Ice would have provided additional sustainable potential to accommodate 4000m² photovoltaic cell arrays generating 300kW – enough power to maintain the ice sheet in summer.
