Aonui Architecture

Prime views and ideal microclimates are frequent contradictions and none more so than in  the development of this Khandallah house, especially since its addition involved a new floor level in the yawning south facing space under the original 1950 structure.

The architectural challenge therefore was to create and connect the new living spaces, celebrate the view and at the same time introduce sun: light and heat from the shallow north elevation.

Aonui pushed the garages to one side and created a three-storey glass stairwell that connects with the street and sunken garden and invigorates the whole house.

Solar gain and artificial heating in the upper floor kitchen, dining, library space creates a more comfortable interior than the shaded lower levels which are therefore reticulated with a Solarhomes Ventpac Winsum warm air distribution system.  The house was comprehensively restructured, insulated, double glazed and replumbed in the refurbishment.
