Khandallah House

This site was a rare find in Wellington, with sublime views and an ideal microclimate. The primary addition to this build involved a new floor level in the empty south facing space under the original 1950's structure.

The house was comprehensively restructured, insulated, double glazed and replumbed in the refurbishment.

The architectural challenge was to create and connect the new living spaces, celebrate the view, and introduce sunlight and heat from the north. The resulting scheme pushed the garages to one side to allow for a three-storey glass stairwell that connects both the street and sunken garden, and invigorates the whole house.

Solar gain and heating in the upper floor kitchen, dining, library space creates a warmer interior than the shaded lower levels which are heated with a warm air distribution system.
